Shop My Home: Wall Art

I’m asked questions on my Instagram account every day, covering a variety of subjects. These range from how I plan a gallery wall or what white paint I use through to my favourite canapé recipes and where I get my nails done, with a smattering of ‘hello beautiful’ messages from men who don’t follow me and seem to think that Instagram is the cushion lovers equivalent of Tinder. I wrote a blog a few months ago listing the twenty questions that I’m most regularly asked with my replies - click here to read. However, one of the most common requests is, where do I find art? I wrote about this subject a couple of weeks ago. There’s nothing I like more than finding things that I love to add to my walls, whether it be a charity shop find, a drawing by my kids, memorabilia to frame or a limited edition investment. My walls are a mixture of old and new that never fail to make my heart sing - I get the same amount of joy from a vintage oil painting that I picked up for a fiver in the charity shop as I do from a print that cost twenty times as much.

When I first started posting on Instagram four and a half years ago, one of the most exciting things was that it opened up an entire new world of independent artists to me that were otherwise pretty much unreachable. I’d always loved decorating my walls but this abundance of artists that I hadn’t come across before was a revelation. Over the years, I’ve gradually started to grow my collection. Some have been gifts from Joe (chosen by me), some have been gifts to Joe (chosen by me, classic self gifting), some have been gifts from me to me (okay, quite a lot of them fall into this category) and some have been sent to me by the artists themselves, but every single one of them works perfectly in my home and makes me happy. I’m sure they make Joe happy too although to be fair, he doesn’t mention it often. Ha.

Ninety nine percent of the time, I buy unframed art. If the print is a standard size, I’ll head to The Range, IKEA, B&Q or Wilkos, all of whom do well priced frames, often complete with mounts. If it’s a non standard size, I’ll use an online framing company. I’ve been using Easyframe for the last six months and I’ve been totally happy with the standard and service. It’s also worth looking for local framers who are often competitively priced. I nearly always use mounts in my frames - my art gallery owning friend Craig from Art Of Protest told me recently that it protects the print from sticking to the glass which can happen as the years go by. A good tip.

I recently added a highlight to my Instagram feed showing the non vintage art on my walls and where it came from. I received a huge response and plenty of questions so I thought it was worth documenting both the prints and the artists here on my blog for reference. The majority of these artists are independents who can be found on Instagram. Some are from online or bricks and mortar art galleries - check out Art of Protest, Nelly Duff, Jealous, Liberty Gallery, Delphian Gallery, Print Club London, King & McGaw and Ace Club. And once the world is back to almost normal, you can go in person to The Affordable Art Fair and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, both of whom champion new and upcoming artists. Here are forty of my most asked about prints that are on my walls, ranging from below £20 to a little bit more.

Finally, when you find an artist that you love, make sure you that shout about them! Press the blue button on Instagram, share them on your account. I’ve found some of my favourite prints through word of mouth. I said a few weeks ago that my friend Craig had told me that you should think about supporting art in the same way that you support your favourite football team - follow them and cheer them on. You’ll be supporting small business and talent plus adding beauty to your home at the same time.
