The Furniture Village Thirty Collection: The Cyan Ercol Stacking Chair

PAID PARTNERSHIP/ When Ella, my first child, was one in 2002, we moved house.  I was pregnant with my second child and we decided that we wanted to be more central to a town.  We found a Victorian terrace in Caversham, perfectly located only two minutes from the River Thames and the town and even more importantly, the local Tesco Express, an essential addition to the life of any new parent.  We loved our new home, but we had one problem – terraced period houses are not renowned for space and our sofas didn’t fit into the new sitting room.    With measurements in hand, we set off for our local Furniture Village in Reading and soon found a sofa and chair set that was the perfect fit.  This was over 16 years ago, but I can still remember how helpful and informative the sales person was (plus how very tolerant he was of a toddler who wasn’t in a shopping mood!).  It’s experiences like this that make such a difference when forming your view of a brand.  So when Furniture Village asked me if I would work with them to talk about their 30th Birthday celebrations, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.

The first Furniture Village store was opened in 1989 in Abingdon by Peter Harrison.  It’s still a family run business and Peter’s son, Charlie, has worked hard to develop their online and digital presence.  The founding ethos of the company was to offer high quality furniture and accessories – durable yet attractive products that were excellent value to the customer.  They are now the biggest company of their type in the UK, employing 950 staff within their stores.  This month, the brand will celebrate their 30th Birthday and have launched the Thirty collection, a curated collection of limited edition products which are available to buy until December 2019.

Ercol and Furniture Village have a long standing relationship that goes back to the very early days.  Furniture Village are the UK’s biggest retailers of the brand and as a result, Ercol’s iconic stacking chair is featured as part of the Thirty collection. The Stacking chair was first launched in 1957 and is just as popular today as it was then, with beautifully turned legs and a steam bent back rest.  I was lucky enough to visit the Ercol factory last year and saw these very chairs being made by the skilled craftsmen employed within the company.  Finished in an exclusive Cyan colourway, they look fabulous in any surroundings and add the perfect pop of colour.

I was super happy to receive two of these chairs in order to style them in my home.  The Stacking chair design is iconic and as such, super flexible when it comes to where they can be placed.  Sustainable design led products such as this are excellent investments and can be utilised in a variety of ways.

My first stop was the kitchen, where the chairs worked beautifully with the warm wood and natural tones of the space.  They’re extremely tactile to the touch and the iconic design is the perfect juxtaposition to the rest of the furniture.  My kitchen is decorated in very neutral colours and materials so the Cyan colourway was an excellent contrast.

The Stacking chair looks just as good alone as it does in a set, so I was keen to see how it looked on the landing of my home.  My staircase is covered in favourite pictures and prints – a multitude of colour – and I loved the way that the Cyan chair worked with these.

Ideal as additional chairs for extra guests, I decided to see how the chairs would work in the dining room and I wasn’t disappointed.  They are perfectly proportioned and fit nicely into the room without overpowering the space.  Again, the colour is stand out and makes a real impact.

There are 52 Furniture Village stores across the country with a furniture offering of over 500 different brands, including such names as Harrison Spinks, Duresta, Calligaris, Parker Knoll and Tetrad.  The Thirty collection comprises of eight limited edition products including the following:
